Obsidian Privacy and Syncing

Obsidian Privacy and Syncing

Let me start my saying that I love Obsidian! When I first discovered it, I was a bit overwhelmed, but fortunately, my friend Micah Hoffman has a great video to help you get started here.

I use Obsidian for both personal notes, as well as some more private notes that require a higher level of security. One way that I have found to secure these more sensitive notes, is to use VeraCrypt. If you are not yet familiar with VeraCrypt, it's an amazing encryption solution. It is a for of the original TrueCrypt, which I used and loved for many years, but was abandoned by the developers.

The solution I use is to secure my Obsidian vaults within the encrypted volume with VeraCrypt. That way there, the only way to open the vault with Obsidian, is to first mount the encrypted volume with VeraCrypt.

Obsidian Sync is a solution offered by Obsidian to keep your notes synced across multiple devices. The cost for this service is just $4 per month, which is reasonable, but I prefer a FREE solution. I have a Proton account, which includes Proton Drive. This allows me to store my Obsidian vaults inside my proton drive. As long as I am running the Proton Drive application on each of my machines, then I can access my notes from each of those devices, and they are synced.

These are just a few solution that I have found that work well for me. I hope that you have found this process useful and implement this process in your workflow. If you have any other suggestions of feedback, please feel free to email me.
